AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
As a troop leader and co-founder and seller of MANY MANY BOXES of cookies for my Daisy Troop (we’re up to twenty girls! Holy crap!) I have to say I’m never more proud of the Girl Scout institution than I am with how they are handling all this recent crap. Each troop is entirely unique and individual and we run ours so inclusively that we allow little brothers in (at Daisy level, why not?). Even though we live in a very conservative area I’ve seen how the message behind Girl Scouts of growth, responsibility, and compassion will shut the mouths of even the more conservative parents when it comes to some of the social issues we’ve already had opportunities to address.

I love girl scouts generally. I have been a girl scout for 12 years and a camp counselor for 5. I love seeing people support scouts because it takes a stand on many positive issues. But girl scouts is not a perfect liberal organization like the internet has been making it out to be lately. While I will love GSA till the end of time there are still a lot of issues that it needs to sort out. While employed for girl scouts of I seen people face religious discrimination and homophobia. In many states, GSA actively discriminates against homosexuals to the point where there are different policies for straight and gay employees. I know of camps, specifically in the south, where out lesbians were not allowed to work in the same unit or have take there breaks or nights off with other lesbian staff. Hugging was also banned because with so many lesbian staff it was seen as inappropriate. Lesbian counselors where also punished harsher than straight counselors for committing the same infractions. Discrimination often becomes so terrible that lesbian counselors feel as though they are left with no option but to resign from there postions.
Religious discrimination is also not uncommon. Personally while working at girl scout camps I was forced to say grace before meals. I have no problem with camps leading grace before meals, I actually think it is good for girls to be thankful for what they have. But at multiple camps I have been forced to thank both god and christ. When I approached my bosses about this issue I asked if it would be okay if I just remained silent during grace, and if once a week I could lead a grace where the girls thanked the cooked for the meal. I was told that the graces thanking god and christ where nondenominational and my silence would be noticed by the girls. I was forced to say a daily christian grace at a place that is supposed to support religious freedom. after speaking with other staff through the years, I know that I am not the only employee to face this kind of discrimination.
GSA is a wonderful organization that I believe deserves continued support. I just think that people should know that as an organization it upholds many conservative ideals, and actively discriminates in many states. Girl Scouts is not some liberal idealist organization, and anyone who believes so needs to investigate more about the organizations policies. If you can about Girl Scouts then talk to people about there experiences and fight to change the organization when it does wrong.
*getting off my soapbox now*
